Story of a Portrait
“Marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person.” Mignon McClaughlin
The lights are bright. The flash goes off and the sound of the shutter represents a moment frozen in time. A moment that cannot be re-created. The captured moment has already passed, leaving behind the only tangible item to remember it by. The photo. But this is no ordinary photo, this is a portrait and this portrait is part of your legacy.
A portrait of a couple isn’t simply two people dressed up looking their best in front of the camera, rather, it’s a composition of moments lived together. Happiness, sadness; the fights and the forgiveness that followed. For better or for worse; in sickness and in health. It’s times of prosperity, and times of struggle. Lost jobs, lost loved ones. Tears and laughter; nights by the fire pit, music…and dancing. It’s raising a family; pizza on a Friday night, and a flag football game on a Saturday afternoon. It’s the times you wondered why you ever got married at all, and of course the majority of the time when you’re really glad you did. It’s the “how can I live with you?” quickly followed with “but how can I ever live without you?”
The portrait is a beautiful work of art because of all those moments you’ve lived, and it will live on long after you’re gone. A family history, a family legacy. Don’t be afraid to honor it, document it, and share it.
It’s your life, your love, your legacy. Your portrait-capture it well.
A subject would say what makes a good portrait is a good photographer, and I happen to believe that’s true. I’ve worked with a few over the years and have never been so truly blown away as I was when Anna showed us our photos. She is simply put…brilliant!
